Brett Bastian, professor of practice in physician assistant studies, and Greta Grond, director of DeWitt Library, are the recipients of Northwestern College’s 2023 Inspirational Service Awards. Bastian was chosen as the faculty recipient, while Grond received the staff award during the college’s Celebration Banquet on May 8.
Northwestern College has hired a distinguished engineering educator with experience in administration, teaching and research on three continents to develop a new undergraduate engineering program that is set to launch, following accreditor approval, in the fall of 2024.

Dr. Sally Oakes Edman, director of counseling services at Northwestern College, was named this year’s recipient of the Iowa Psychological Association’s Phil Laughlin Meritorious Achievement Award.
Five Northwestern College students will travel to Italy May 18 through June 1 as part of a program offered by the college’s off-campus study office.
Thirteen teams of Northwestern College students, faculty and staff spent spring break on service trips to seven states, Costa Rica, Bahrain and Mexico.
Seventeen Northwestern College students will spend a portion of their summer as short-term missionaries through the college’s Summer of Service (SOS) program. They will spend five to eight weeks volunteering with mission partners in California, England, Greece, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Kenya, Thailand and Zambia.
Northwestern College will name a soon-to-be-constructed residence hall the Christy Suites in honor of the college’s president, Greg Christy, and his wife, Michelle.
Northwestern College will award degrees to 363 students during its annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13. Master of Education degrees will be presented to 129 students; another 217 will receive Bachelor of Arts degrees; and 17, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.
