Performance ensembles
All students, regardless of major, are invited to audition for any performing ensemble.
The A cappella Choir sings choral literature from the Renaissance through the 21st century and performs major choral works with area symphony orchestras. The choir has performed on national radio and television and tours regularly in the U.S. and abroad. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The brass, percussion, string and woodwind ensembles involve the best Northwestern musicians in their respective performance areas. The groups perform core, innovative and specialized literature in a variety of venues and events. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Heritage Singers members are chosen by audition from the A cappella Choir. The ensemble regularly performs chamber operas, madrigal dinners and virtuosic chamber music. Heritage Singers frequently collaborate with area orchestras and choirs in performances of the major oratorio literature. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Jazz Band is a full big band that plays a variety of jazz styles. The ensemble performs several times each year and features guest and student soloists. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Orchestra consists of student musicians, regardless of major, who perform works for string orchestra and full orchestra. The repertoire is varied from multiple eras and stylistic periods. Membership is granted through an audition with the director.
The Red Raider Athletic Band performs during home football and basketball games. It is led by Steve Connell, who directed the award-winning Pride of the Dutchmen Marching Band at MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City for more than 40 years. A minimum of 15 students are awarded activity grants for their involvement.
This adventuresome ensemble of percussionists plays avant-garde, classical, jazz and world music on campus and at select events. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of repertoire, from newly composed works to wind band standards. In addition, it has commissioned and premiered works by leading American composers and performed with professional guest soloists and conductors. The band has toured throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, and Central and South America. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major.
The Women’s Choir performs on campus and in area churches and schools. Membership is open to all women, regardless of major.
