NWC pins nursing graduates

Twenty-one Northwestern College nursing seniors will participate in a pinning ceremony Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The students will receive their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree diplomas May 14.

Community members are invited to the pinning ceremony, which will also formally induct 22 sophomores into the B.S.N. program. The underclassmen will receive nursing lamps and certificates of commitment, indicating they intend to practice Christian nursing as defined by “The Code of Christian Nursing Ethics,” authored by Dr. Ruth Daumer, the department’s chairperson. The code is based on the nursing program’s philosophy of nursing as a healing ministry.

Speaker for the event is former Northwestern nursing professor Linda Ver Steeg, who taught in the department until last spring. Now a medical surgical clinical education specialist for the four-hospital Iowa Health system in Des Moines, Ver Steeg will speak on the challenges and opportunities for Christian nurses in a complex and hurting society.

Northwestern’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. All of Northwestern’s B.S.N. alumni have passed their nursing board exams, including 93 percent who passed on their first attempt. Several of the seniors have already secured positions in hospitals and clinics across the U.S.
