Don Ortman served as an elementary school principal in Rock Valley, Iowa, for 22 years, during which time he was named the Iowa Principal of the Year in 2003, the Iowa Character Counts Administrator of the Year in 2005, and the Iowa Reading Administrator of the Year in 2007. He currently is the social emotional learning ambassador for National University, through which he provides training and consultation to schools and organizations to help them meet the social and emotional learning needs of children and staff. Ortman also spent six years as an elementary teacher in Griswold, Iowa. A graduate of Buena Vista University, he earned a master's degree in educational administration from Northwest Missouri State University.
