Theatre professor's book receives award

A book of autobiographical scripts by Dr. Robert Hubbard, theatre professor at Northwestern College, has received a BRAG Medallion award from indieBRAG, an organization that reviews and recommends the work of self-published authors.

The aim of indieBRAG is “to discover talented self-published authors and help them give their work the attention and recognition it deserves.” Only 20 to 25 percent of the books submitted for review by the organization’s international readers received BRAG Medallions.

Hubbard’s book, “Grace Notes: Stories of Surprise, Regret and Redemption,” is a collection of scripts he has written and performed as one-person shows in schools, churches and at fringe festivals throughout the U.S.

The book’s chapters describe coming-of-age events during Hubbard’s life: his relationship with his alcoholic father and his surprising, unbridled joy when his father’s favorite team, the Denver Broncos, won the Super Bowl. The indieBRAG website’s description of “Grace Notes” says, “Hubbard leads readers on a journey—across football fields, through dangerous mountain crags, or down to his humid basement hideaway—with a writing style that is fresh, hilarious and intoxicating in its honesty.”

Hubbard decided to publish the stories—which can be performed all together as a full-length play or individually as 20- to 30-minute dramas—in response to numerous requests for the scripts from audience members.
