Northwestern student directors to present one-acts

Northwestern College directing students will present nine short plays Dec. 9 and 10 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Allen Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center. The plays are 10 to 20 minutes in length. Community members are invited.

“Amicable Parting,” about a divorcing couple distracted by their passion for each other, will be directed by junior Amanda Hays.

Junior Carolyn Hopkins will direct “The Intruder.” The disturbing drama stars a husband waiting for his sister and a doctor to attend to his sick wife.

“Variations on the Death of Trotsky” is an absurd comedy in which the main actor spends all his time on stage with an axe in his skull. It will be directed by junior Julia VanDyk.

Junior Abby Bliss will direct “Code Blue,” a romantic comedy that includes a death-day cake and awkward DTR (Define the Relationship) conversation.

Junior Abigail Stoscher will direct “Welsh Honeymoon,” a romantic comedy in which a husband spooked into believing his wife is about to die sweetens his commitment to their relationship.

“Fourteen,” about a matchmaking dinner thwarted by a snowstorm, will take the stage under the direction of senior Caitlin Porter.

“Voices,” a WWI drama about a prayer for a French rescuer, will be directed by student Sam Barnes.

“The Universal Language,” in which Don tries to teach Dawn the language Unamunda to rid her of her stutter, will be directed by junior Caroline Trewet.

Junior Logan Wright will direct “Sorry Wrong Number.” In the play, Mrs. Stevenson, confined to bed, tries to reach her husband, but a wire switch allows her to overhear some unsettling news.

The one-acts are produced as the student-directors’ final exams with peers as actors and minimal staging. They will be presented in quick succession with an intermission halfway through the event.
