Joseph Cashore remembers seeing his first marionette at age 10 or 11; it was hanging from the ceiling of a gift shop. He stood and imagined the possibilities, then worked up the courage to ask the saleswoman if he could try moving the marionette. She refused.
That didn't stop Cashore. He went on to create amazingly lifelike marionettes and perform with them. His awards include a Pew Fellowship for Performance Art for artistic accomplishment and a Henson Foundation Grant, which encourages puppetry to adult audiences. He received the highest honor possible for an American puppeteer, a UNIMA Citation of Excellence, "awarded to shows that touch their audiences deeply; that totally engage, enchant and enthrall." Joe and Wilma Cashore have toured across North America and received numerous accolades.
"This collection of puppet vignettes, set to well-chosen music, is a simple but brilliant production that carries the audience through a range of feelings. I can't recommend this show highly enough," wrote a reviewer for the Calgary Herald.
The 70-minute show to be presented at Northwestern, Life in Motion, is a series of scenes taken from everyday life and set to music by composers including Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss and Copland. It's a theatrical piece which uses marionettes to evoke strong emotion, so it is highly recommended for adults and for children ages eight and up.
The Cashore Marionettes' winter/spring tour includes venues in Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts and South Carolina.
