The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will present a concert on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
The band, under the direction of Dr. Tim McGarvey, professor of music at Northwestern, will perform a variety of pieces tied to American dances, including Frank Ticheli’s San Antonio Dances: “Alamo Gardens” and “Tex-Mex on the Riverwalk.” The band will also perform music featured in four dances from the musical “West Side Story,” including “Scherzo,” “Cha-cha” and “Cool” by Leonard Bernstein, as well as “Mambo,” arranged by Ian Polster.
The ensemble will also perform five movements from Robert Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances,” including “Cake Walk,” “Schottische,” “Western One-Step,” “Wallflower Waltz” and “Rag.”
Aaron Copeland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” from his ballet “Appalachian Spring,” will also be performed during the concert, in addition to Norman Dello Joio’s “Satiric Dances.”
