NWC adjunct music faculty to present concert
Thursday, October 15, 2015
Members of Northwestern College’s adjunct music faculty will present a recital on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
A number of part-time music instructors will perform during the concert, including harp instructor Anna Vorhes, who will present “Absidioles” by Bernard Andres. She will also perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Six Studies in English Folk Song,” accompanied by Marian Casey on cello, and Giacomo Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro (Oh my beloved father)” with Casey on soprano cross-cut saw.
MaryLou Wielenga, organ and piano instructor, will perform two pieces for the organ, “Improvisation, Op. 150, No. 7” by Camille Saint-Saens and “Fiat Lux (Let There Be Light)” by Theodore Dubois.
During her rendition of Dubois’ piece, Wielenga will utilize the cymbalstern, an organ stop that consists of a metal wheel on which several small bells are mounted. When the stop is engaged, the wheel rotates, producing a continuous sound of bells. The cymbalstern is a recent addition to the organ, given to the college by Dr. Kimberly Utke Svanoe, professor emeritus of music.
Wielenga will also perform “Piano Trio in F Minor, Op. 65, No. 3” by Antonin Dvorak. Joining her will be Lisa Miedema, violin instructor, and Casey on cello.
John Casey, string bass instructor, will accompany Pam De Haan on piano during their performance of “Intermezzo, Op. 9 No. 1” by Reinhold Gliere.
Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Canonic Sonatas” will also be performed by John Casey on string bass, accompanied by Marian Casey on cello.
