Pianist to perform guest recital at Northwestern

Northwestern College will present a recital by pianist Dr. Jeremy Owens on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Owens will perform a variety of works for solo piano, including Johann Sebastian Bach’s “French Suite No. 6 in E Major” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sonata in D Major.” During the second half of his performance, he will play “Rondo Capriccioso” by Felix Mendelssohn, Greg Robins’ “…and a round of interruptions and halts,” and “Sonata No. 7 in B-flat Major” by Sergei Prokofiev.

As an associate professor of music at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Owens teaches courses in music history and appreciation. He also accompanies the university’s chamber choir, vocal students and a cappella group. Off campus, he performs as the organist/pianist for Grace Methodist Church, principal keyboardist for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and accompanist for the Abu Bekr Shrine Chanter Unit. He also serves as a freelance accompanist, adjudicator for piano competitions and master class teacher throughout the country.

In addition to performing recitals throughout the United States, Owens has also received numerous honors and awards, including being named the two-time winner of the Alabama MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition. He was also the recipient of the Mississippi Humanities Teacher Award from Blue Mountain College, where he served as an assistant professor of music prior to teaching at Briar Cliff.

Owens is a graduate of Concordia College in Minnesota and completed both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance from the University of Alabama.
