NWC to present violin and piano recital

Northwestern College will present a violin and piano duo recital by Dr. Keum Hwa Cha and Dr. Juyeon Kang on Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert, “French Music for Violin and Piano,” will feature a variety of classical pieces by French composers, including “Sonata for Violin and Basso continuo in D Major, Op. 9, No. 3” by Jean-Marie Leclair and “Grand Sonata” by Rodolphe Kreutzer. The performance will also include Jules Massenet’s “Meditation from Thaïs” and “Sonata No. 1 in A Major, Op. 13” by Gabriel Fauré.

Cha is an assistant professor of music at Idaho State University and teaches applied violin, viola and chamber music. Named concertmaster of the Idaho State-Civic Symphony in 2011, Cha has given numerous concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in South Korea and across the United States. She has served as the director of the chamber orchestra at Idaho State and was the leader and founder of Ka-Eum String Chamber Orchestra at the Eastman School of Music.

Prior to teaching at Idaho State, Cha taught at Chung-Ang University, Dankook University, Dongduk Women’s University and Sungshin Women’s University in South Korea.

Kang, associate professor of music at Northwestern, has performed as a soloist with numerous symphony orchestras, including the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Hingham Symphony Orchestra and the Korean Symphony Orchestra. A native of Korea, Kang has performed on four continents and numerous countries, including Brazil, Finland, Italy, Germany, Malaysia and Thailand. In 2013, she gave a debut recital at Carnegie Weill Hall in New York City.

Both Cha and Kang earned master’s degrees and doctorates from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
