Northwestern chamber ensembles to perform

Northwestern College chamber ensembles will present a concert Friday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert will include performances by a woodwind quintet, brass quintet, piano trio and string trio. The ensembles will perform a wide variety of music.

Under the instruction of Tim McGarvey, professor of music, the woodwind quintet will perform two classical pieces, “Allegro Molto from Divertimento No. 14” by Mozart and Claude Debussy’s “Reverie.” They will also present “What Wondrous Love is This,” arranged by Paul Edwards; “Wapango” by Paquito D’Rivera; “Estrellita” by Manuel Ponce; and Scott Joplin’s “Paragon Rag.”

The brass quintet, also under the instruction of McGarvey, will perform “Contrapunctus V” by J.S. Bach; “Like a River Glorious,” arranged by Robert Supplee; and Samuel Scheidt’s “Paduan from Suite for Brass Quintet.” The ensemble will also perform Henry Purcell’s “Trumpet Voluntary”; “Just a Closer Walk,” arranged by Don Gillis; Daniel Emmet’s “Dixie”; and “Fanfare” by Paul Dukas, written for the ballet performance of La Péri.

Juyeon Kang, associate professor of music, instructed the piano and string trios.

The piano trio, made up of piano, violin and viola, will perform Mozart’s “Trio No. 4 in E flat major, K. 498.” The string trio, featuring violins and a viola, will present Antonin Dvorák’s “Terzetto in C Major, Opus 74.”
