Peripherie to perform concert at NWC
Wednesday, September 10, 2014
Ensemble: Périphérie, a chamber ensemble co-founded by Northwestern College associate professor of music Luke Dahn, will perform in the college’s Christ Chapel on Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
Dahn and Co-Artistic Director Dr. Joseph Dangerfield, associate professor of music at Coe College, founded Ensemble: Périphérie in 2010 with a mission of communicating and sharing with others a love and joy for new music. The group, conducted by Dangerfield, performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall last October as part of the DCINY Distinguished Artists Series. Dahn’s composition, “Calder Cadences,” was featured in the program.
Ensemble: Périphérie, www.ensembleperipherie.com, includes strings, clarinet, flute, percussion, piano and soprano vocals. All of the members have completed advanced degrees in music—many at the University of Iowa—and have performed and recorded widely.
The concert will feature new works from both emerging and established composers, including Karim Al-Zand’s “Hallows and Dells,” Tomasz Skweres’ “Direkt” and George Crumb’s seminal “Vox Balaenae.” The ensemble will also perform “Broken Obelisk” by Dangerfield and “Confessions of Saint Augustine” by Dahn.
The concert will conclude the ensemble’s tour of the upper Midwest, with performances at the University of Minnesota-Morris, Saint Cloud State University and MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis.
