Pianist May Phang to perform recital at Northwestern

Northwestern College will host a recital by acclaimed pianist May Phang as part of its McGilvra Artist Piano Recital series on Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Phang is described as “a pianist of unassuming charm and sensitivity rare amongst young people today” by The Straits Times of her native Singapore. She has been a prizewinner in the Chopin Young Pianists’ Competition in Buffalo, N.Y., and the Pontoise International Young Artists Competition in France.

With performance experience on three continents, Phang has given solo recitals and chamber music concerts in venues such as the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Goethe Institute in Singapore. She has performed with many orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony.

Phang is an assistant professor of piano at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. She is a graduate of McGill University in Canada and received a doctorate from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Given annually, McGilvra Artist Piano Recitals feature guest musicians with extensive performing and teaching experience. Each year, the guest performer also serves as judge for the MGilvra Keyboard Competition, a scholarship contest for music students. The recital series and scholarship competition are named after Harold McGilvra, a lifelong music instructor.
