Violinist and pianist to perform

Violinist Wolfgang David and pianist David Gompper will perform a guest recital at Northwestern College on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.

David has performed as a guest soloist with many leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berne Symphony Orchestra. He has played in major concert halls such as Konzerthaus in Vienna, Carnegie Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London. His career highlights include performing at the Great Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York and in Bangkok for the queen of Thailand.

The winner of many competitions and prizes, David began studying music at age 8 when he was admitted to the University for Music in Vienna. He later continued his music education at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and at the Guildhall School of Music in London.

Gompper is the director of the Center for New Music at the University of Iowa. His professional work as a pianist, conductor and composer has taken him places such as New York, San Diego, London and Nigeria. As a Fulbright Scholar, he taught, performed and conducted at the Moscow Conservatory in 2002–03.

Gompper’s compositions have been performed at Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall, and they have been recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. A 2009 recipient of the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Gompper studied at the Royal College of Music in London and earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan.

David and Gompper’s guest recital at Northwestern will feature the works Nigun (Improvisation) No. 2 from Baal Shem by Ernest Bloch, Salmagundi Farrago by Christopher Gainey, Tristia by Jeremy Dale Roberts and Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 94a by Sergei Prokofiev, as well as a composition by Gompper, Calling Cards.
