Choir to tour
Wednesday, March 16, 2011
The A cappella Choir of Northwestern College will tour March 31 through April 3, performing in churches in Osage and Sibley, Iowa, and Lake Crystal and Owatonna, Minn. Visit www.nwciowa.edu/choir-tour for concert times and details.
The three-part concert begins with songs that communicate God’s comfort and grace in suffering and sorrow. It will include a black gospel setting of Take My Hand, Precious Lord and Eric Whitacre’s When David Heard, about the death of David’s son Absalom.
Section two of the concert will feature virtuosic choral works, including choreographed opera excerpts, Candide and Under the Sea, as well as nature songs by Brahms and Barnum. In Sounding Sea, the vocalists will sing the sounds of water crashing on the shore, and a Taiwanese folk song will include the onomatopoeic sounds of a steam engine train.
The concert will conclude with a selection of spirituals and the choir’s traditional final song, Beautiful Savior.
The 58-member A cappella Choir is directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, professor of music at Northwestern and conductor of the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus. The ensemble has performed across the U.S. and spent 10 days performing in Europe last spring.
The choir will perform its home concert in Northwestern’s Christ Chapel on Friday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m.
