Symphonic Band to perform

Northwestern College’s Symphonic Band will perform a travel-oriented concert on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.

The 56-member ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Tim McGarvey, professor of music, will perform 10 pieces pertaining to the theme of travel. The first half features a variety of compositions from different cultures in Europe and South America.

The concert will open with an Irish-flavored work, Kirkpatrick Fanfare, by Andrew Boysen Jr. Other music in the first half will include Return to the Mountain by Shelley Hanson, a work based on folk tunes of the Quechua people of South America, and Darius Milhaud’s Suite Française, which presents popular melodies from the French provinces in which American and Allied forces fought with the French underground during World War II.

The second half of the concert features pieces depicting a particular fictitious journey, including Blue Sky Day by Timothy Mahr, Down a Country Lane by Aaron Copland, David Holsinger’s Scootin’ on Hardrock and Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst. The finale is an elaborate fanfare, Dana Wilson’s Shortcut Home, which features various jazz styles while the music proclaims and cascades, always driving towards “home” in the final chord.
