Family Weekend Concert set for Oct. 30

Northwestern College will present its annual Family Weekend Concert, featuring most of the music department ensembles and some award-winning student soloists, on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Chamber Orchestra, directed by Dr. Kimberly Utke Svanoe, professor of music, will open the concert with Giovanni Sammartini’s Sinfonia in G. The Women’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Linell Moss, visiting assistant professor of music, will perform a Romanian piece by Jonathan Pieslak, Solar Flares. The Women’s Choir will also sing Hope for Resolution by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory.

The A cappella Choir, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Holm, professor of music, will perform several pieces. The ensemble’s repertoire will include the first movement of Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, accompanied by pianist Paul Whitley, instructor in music, and Eric William Barnum’s The Sounding Sea. The Heritage Singers, also under the direction of Holm, will perform Alan Menken’s Under the Sea.

The Symphonic Band’s performance, under the direction of Dr. Timothy McGarvey, professor of music, will include Kirkpatrick Fanfare by Andrew Boysen Jr. and Scootin’ on Hardrock by David Holsinger.

The concert will also feature several Northwestern student music scholarship recipients. Junior baritone Simon Campbell will sing Roger Quilter’s Come Away, Death. Sophomore Meghan Schuster will perform the first movement of Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet. Senior pianist Kai-Hao Chen will perform Franz Schubert’s Impromptu, Op. 90, No. 2.
