NWC Carlson Interns assist Sheriff's Office

Northwestern College students and Carlson Interns Amber Beyer and Julia VanDyk assisted the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office with public relations material this summer.

Beyer and VanDyk worked closely with Sheriff Dan Altena and his staff to produce nine public relation and educational videos. “The videos will educate the public about all facets of the sheriff’s office, including an overall view of the office, deputy patrol staff, jail and communication operations,” says Altena. “Our school resource officers have several videos they’ll use for educational purposes, and our K9 and drug investigation units will use them for programs they provide to the public.”

The videos will be posted on the sheriff’s office YouTube channel, and will also be linked from the department’s Facebook page and website.

“It’s important that the public understand what we do and how we strive to ‘Serve and Protect,’” says Altena. “We hope these videos help accomplish that.”

The internships were placed through the college’s Franken Leadership Center, which manages the Carlson Internship program. The program matches highly motivated and intellectually curious students with top internships throughout the country.

Beyer is a senior from Pella, Iowa. The daughter of Douglas and Jennifer Attema, she is majoring in social work and theatre.

VanDyk is a junior public relations and theatre major. She is the daughter of John and Christina VanDyk of Ames, Iowa.
