Prior to joining Northwestern's faculty, Dr. Ehler was the Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Iowa Central Community College for six years. He also taught chemistry for 19 years at Buena Vista University, his alma mater, and for one year at Briar Cliff College. He is a grant-winning researcher who has presented his work at state and regional scientific meetings and been published in Applied Physics B, the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, and the Journal of Physical Chemistry B.

In addition to a bachelor's degree in chemistry from BVU, he has a master's degree in chemistry from the University of South Dakota and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Wyoming.
