NWC student wins journalism award

Tom Westerholm, a Northwestern College junior writing and rhetoric major from Orange City, was honored for his journalistic writing talents at the recent Iowa College Media Association’s (ICMA) awards banquet in Des Moines. Westerholm received third prize in the Best Review category for his criticism of Muse’s album “The 2nd Law.”

Westerholm, editor of the Arts & Culture section for Northwestern’s student newspaper, the Beacon, wrote his award-winning piece, “Latest Muse album dabbles in dubstep,” last fall. The story was later entered into the 2012 ICMA student newspaper competition and scored against stories by journalists from colleges and universities throughout the state.
