Pie, a short story by Northwestern College senior Anna Pitney, Wausau, Wis., has been accepted for publication in the Albion Review.
Published annually by Albion College in Michigan, the literary journal showcases the work of emerging undergraduate writers and artists. Pie" will be in the 2011 issue, which comes off presses this spring.
Pitney wrote the 3,500-word story as part of an independent study in advanced short fiction with Weston Cutter, a published author and English professor at Northwestern.
The story's central character, Grace, is a college student. Over a late-night piece of pie with her dad, she reflects on their relationship, which has weathered his job losses and the family's subsequent moves, including one before Grace's senior year in high school.
Enthusiastic about Pitney's publishing success, Cutter said, "As someone who does writing and publishing, I'll say that getting a story accepted this early in her writing career is a wonderfully auspicious start for Anna."
A theatre and speech major and English teaching minor, Pitney will student-teach at a Christian academy in Bloomington, Ill., next fall. She plans to teach high school English and direct plays.
