Johnny Venegas

Created to worship

Johnny was looking for a college that didn’t just claim to be Christian but actually embodied its beliefs. At Northwestern, he found an authentic community of people who were living out their faith and seeking to grow in their relationship with Jesus each day. His Northwestern experience took his faith to a new level and prepared him for his calling in worship ministry today.

What attracted you to the worship arts program at Northwestern?
I’ve been leading worship from a very young age and always felt a calling to pursue ministry. The worship arts program does a great job of teaching about worship technology, which is a huge part of leading worship in today’s culture. Having this knowledge is crucial to both finding a job in this field and being able to create meaningful worship experiences within the local church.

What kind of impact did Northwestern have on your relationship with God?
At Northwestern I was challenged to strengthen my faith and discern why I believed the things I did. Growing up in the church, I felt like I already knew a lot, but at NWC I learned even more. Deep theological conversations with both students and professors grew my relationship with God and helped to solidify how I viewed God.

How well did Northwestern prepare you for your career?
I was prepared very well in my understanding of music and theology, which are both crucial for being a worship leader. My experiences leading worship in chapel, churches in the community, and as part of the traveling worship team gave me practical experience for what I’m doing today.

What do you love about your current role?
I love that I get to lead the church in worship. There’s so much going on in the world today that is discouraging. Being able to lift people’s spirits, restore their hope and remind them who our God is through music is a blessing. God loves music and loves to minister to his church through it. I’m thankful I can play a small part in his mission.
