Watching students grow and mature during four years on campus is what draws Dr. Schouten to college-level teaching and coaching. “In their four years as students, an amazing amount of growth takes place in this setting. So much growth—spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually—occurs, and I love being a part of that process.”
Continual learner
Dr. Schouten points to the integration of faith and academics as a prime strength of Christian liberal arts education. Though the processes and pathways are different for each student, the desired outcome is the same—the overarching theme being strong preparation for every student’s eventual calling in Christ’s kingdom. He also believes the process of education never really ends. “I want to instill a desire of continuous learning and contemplation among my students.”
Passionate about baseball
During his 16 years as a professor in the health and human performance department at Dordt University, Dr. Schouten was also the head baseball coach. He now serves as an assistant for the Red Raiders’ baseball program. A standout high school and college player, he sees coaching as a way to serve the Northwestern community and to stay active in a game he thoroughly enjoys.
Sports lover
When he’s not busy in the classroom or on the playing field, Dr. Schouten can often be found watching his children’s sports events. He also enjoys golf, CrossFit and racquetball, and he is a faithful fan of the Florida State Seminoles.
