The perfect solution

Jacob wasn’t considering Northwestern until his mom—an alumna—brought him and his twin brother for a visit. That’s all it took for both of them to select a college 1,400 miles from home. In addition to minoring in philosophy, Jacob is a pitcher on the Raider baseball team and has participated in Northwestern’s Summer of Service program. He is currently considering a career in the medical field.

The right stuff
I’m at Northwestern College because of its small size, strong science departments, and incredible Christian community. Many other schools I looked at had one or maybe two of those things. No school other than Northwestern had all three.

Fearfully and wonderfully made
I decided to major in biochemistry because it combines the disciplines of biology and chemistry. While I enjoy both on their own, it’s fascinating to learn about the intricacies of biochemical processes in the human body.

Intelligent belief
My biochemistry major has strengthened my beliefs by showing me that science and faith don’t need to be at odds. Going into the field of science doesn’t require you to give up your faith. My professors have different ways of integrating Christianity into the material they are teaching, but the common theme throughout is that learning and faith go hand in hand. They are also preparing me extremely well for what comes after college, whether that’s graduate school or my first job.

Trial and error
While I have many great memories of Northwestern, my favorite science-related memory is probably in the organic chemistry lab when my brother mixed an acid in the wrong order, resulting in an explosion. His fingernail was dyed yellow for a month!
