Strategic marketing
Harris is combining his marketing major with a minor in project management. He says that what he is learning in the classroom will help him market himself to future employers. Leadership roles held at Northwestern and a summer internship will further add to his resume. He’s also gaining experience in marketing as a manager of Northwestern’s esports team. Harris is interested in a career at a marketing agency, as a marketing strategist, or in management.
Multifaceted
I’m fascinated by the research, strategy and statistics involved in marketing. Learning about all that’s involved in planning and organizing a marketing campaign showed me all the different roles within a marketing firm. You need people to research data and human behavior, people to interpret the information and decide on a best strategy, and people to design and create the marketing materials. The more I learned, the more interested I became in studying marketing.
On-the-job training
During the summer, I had an internship at an advertising agency. It was a great experience to see marketing projects go from planning to completion. Learning about the finances, strategies and communications required to create advertisements gave me an even greater interest in marketing.
Learning to lead
I’m a tutor for a project management course, which gives me the opportunity to share my expertise with other students. I also lead a discipleship group for the guys living on my floor, which is a great way to build community and dive into the Word together. Other opportunities to lead come in small interactions, whether it’s offering advice to teammates, hanging out with kids in an after-school program, or organizing a dorm event.
Men’s retreat
My favorite memory from my time at Northwestern so far was the men’s retreat last winter. From broomball on a frozen lake in zero-degree weather to playing board games late into the night, it was a great escape from everyday college life. Hearing the testimonies of some of the older guys and seeing how God has been working in their lives strengthened my own faith and challenged me to see how God is working in my life too.
