Northwestern College to host Cultural Fair

The Northwestern College International Club will host its annual Cultural Fair on Saturday, Feb. 2. The public is invited to the event, which will include food and entertainment from around the world.

Northwestern’s International Club has selected the theme of this year’s Cultural Fair as “We Are the World.” “The event is intended to evoke a global focus that we’re all a part of,” says Dr. Kevin McMahan, associate dean for intercultural development at Northwestern.

The Cultural Fair will take place in the college’s Rowenhorst Student Center with a dinner of dishes from around the world beginning at 5 p.m. A stage show will follow at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; $6 for individuals 15 and younger or $3 if accompanied by a parent. Children ages 3 and younger are free.

“This event provides a rare opportunity to experience a taste of culture that isn’t evidently around you,” says Nnenna Nwaelugo, a senior biology-health professions major from Nigeria who serves as president of the International Club. “As international students, we’re thrilled to see people partake in and enjoy the things we love so much about our homes.”

Northwestern’s International Club has nearly 200 members, 40 of whom are international students from nearly 20 different countries.

The college’s International Club, founded in 1975, was created to support students from different countries and promote learning about their respective cultures. The club is open to both international and U.S. students, and it uses events like the Cultural Fair to build relationships that help the Northwestern community experience and practice positive cross-cultural interaction.
