Van Beek honored with staff service award

Arlo Van Beek, housekeeping supervisor at Northwestern College, is the recipient of the college’s 2015 Staff Inspirational Service Award. His selection was announced at a recognition banquet for faculty and staff on May 4.
The award recognizes staff members who consistently provide outstanding contributions by going above and beyond what is expected, who personify a strong Christian commitment, and who distinguish themselves as an inspiration to the campus community. A selection committee composed of faculty and staff chose the winner from among candidates nominated by Northwestern employees.
Van Beek has worked in Northwestern’s maintenance department for 24 years. His supervisor, Scott Simmelink, director of maintenance and operations, describes Van Beek as a true team member and a huge asset to the college community.
“Whether it’s overseeing the housekeeping staff, supervising student workers, moving offices or making repairs on the cleaning equipment, he continually goes above what’s required and delights in a job well done,” said Simmelink in a letter of nomination. “He is always willing to help out wherever needed and does this with a Christ-like spirit. He leads by example and makes decisions in the best interest of the college.”
Rick Clark, instructor in Spanish, saw Van Beek’s selfless attitude last summer when Clark’s department moved to Kepp Hall. “Arlo was absolutely amazing with his patience and care for detail. He wanted badly to make sure everything was perfect for us, and his help was fantastic. He was a great example of a godly, humble servant.”
Clark’s office was one of 50 that moved last summer, under Van Beek’s direction. The housekeeping supervisor also scheduled and oversaw the summer deep-cleaning schedule in campus facilities, all while facing knee replacement surgery in the fall.
