Students to study in Oman over Christmas break

Thirteen Northwestern College students will participate in a study abroad program in Oman from Dec. 19 to Jan. 6.
The Northwestern group, led by Dr. Scott Monsma, associate professor of sociology, will spend time in the cities of Muscat, Sur and Nizwa, engaging in a dialogue about Islam, Arab culture and Omani culture. Program discussions and activities will focus on Christianity and Islam, the modernization of Oman, cultural and religious diversity in Oman, and Western cultural influences on Omani culture.
Monsma has worked closely with Michael Bos, director of the Al Amana Center in Muscat, which is affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, in planning the Oman study abroad trip. Monsma previously led a group of five students to Oman during Christmas break in 2004 and a group of 10 students in 2006. Last spring, he led a group of seven staff and faculty.
