A Northwestern College history major was honored for presenting the best paper in media history at the Student History Conference, sponsored by the Phi Alpha Theta history honors society at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, on April 24.
Brittany Lassen, a junior from Remsen, Iowa, received the honor. She presented “The Legend(s) of Billy the Kid” as part of a session on popular culture and the American West.
Five other Northwestern students presented papers and another offered comments.
Carl Erickson, a junior history and political science major from Blue Earth, Minn., presented “Ansel Adams and the Shift in the American Mind About the West” during the session on popular culture and the American West.
Brett Gray, a senior history major from Underwood, Iowa, presented a paper, “Graphic Biographies,” as part of a session on history and fiction in the graphic novel.
Ross Hunter, a junior history major from Davenport, Neb., presented “Armageddon and a Naked Blue Man: History, Historiography, and Identity in Alan Moore’s ‘Watchmen’” during the session on history and fiction in the graphic novel.
Also speaking in that session, Levi Mogan, a junior history major from Lake Park, Iowa, presented “Maus and Persepolis.”
Emily Todd, a senior history major from Holstein, Iowa, presented “A Bonanza of Violence” in the session on popular culture and the American West.
Hannah Cornthwaite, a junior history major from Clyde Park, Mont., offered comments on a paper in the regional history session.
