Billi Ellingson, a senior actuarial science major from Pella, Iowa, was named Northwestern College’s 2006 recipient of the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. She was among about 350 students from around the nation who received a year’s subscription to the business newspaper and whose names were printed in the Sept. 20 Wall Street Journal. Ellingson was chosen as Northwestern’s recipient by the business department. Dr. Graham Lemke, assistant professor of business and economics, said Ellingson was selected based on the efforts she put into assignments related to Wall Street Journal articles in his investments class as well as her academic credentials. “This recognizes Billi’s interest in learning about the financial world through discussions of material that appears in the Journal,” he said.
Ellingson’s business experience includes a spring 2006 internship in the actuarial department of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois in Chicago and a summer 2005 position working in the marketing department of VSR Financial Services Inc. in Overland Park, Kan. On campus, she was the only student member of the committee that prepared Northwestern’s self-study for accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. She also plays tenor saxophone in Jazz Band, is active in the Campus Democrats, has served as a tutor, and has participated in a Spring Service Project.
