VanDerWerff presents paper at conference

Dr. Jeff VanDerWerff, associate professor of political science, was among those who made presentations at the National Faculty Leadership Conference June 22–25 in Washington, D.C. VanDerWerff presented a reworking of his tenure paper, “Engaging Democracy: Politics in the Name of Jesus.”

Sponsored by Christian Leadership Ministries, the faculty ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, the conference is designed to encourage and equip Christian professors to be more effective for Christ in their universities and academic fields, in their personal witness for Christ to their students and colleagues, and in the integration of their faith with their scholarship.

The theme of the 2006 conference—“The Two Tasks: Redeeming the Soul, Redeeming the Mind”—was chosen to honor the life and work of Dr. Charles Habib Malik in the centenary year of his birth. A native of Lebanon, Malik was a professor and international statesman who served on the faculty of American University of Beirut, as Lebanese ambassador to the United States, and as president of the United Nations General Assembly. He also authored two books: “Two Tasks” and “A Christian Critique of the University.”
