Dr. Chris Melby, professor and department head of Food Science and Nutrition at Colorado State University, is a well-respected speaker on topics of nutrition, weight loss and obesity.

A summary of his presentation:

“Societal changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are undoubtedly at the core of the recent obesity epidemic in the U.S. However, there is substantial evidence that strong biological forces also are involved in body weight regulation, some of which may explain the difficulties encountered by many individuals in successfully maintaining long-term weight loss. The purpose of this presentation is to: 1) discuss the biological and behavioral adjustments that accompany weight regulation; 2) discuss the evidence that human biology affects human behaviors that are relevant to body weight regain following weight loss; and 3) identify approaches to minimize biological and behavioral drives to regain body weight following acute weight loss.”
