Cultivating a renewed sense of contemplative activism, Chris Heuertz has spent his life bearing witness to hope—the possibility of hope in a good God among a world that has legitimate reasons to question God's goodness.

An activist, author, visionary and public speaker, Chris has traveled with his wife, Phileena, through nearly 70 countries working with the most vulnerable of the world's poor—Roma (gypsies), children with AIDS, prostituted women and girls, recovering drug addicts, children on the streets and refugees.

Simple Spirituality: Learning to See God in a Broken World (IVP, 2008) is Chris' first book. It shares touching stories from his life working among the most vulnerable. His second book, Friendship at the Margins: Discovering Mutuality in Service and Mission (IVP, 2010) is part of Duke Divinity School’s Center for Reconciliation’s small book series.

Chris has led Word Made Flesh (http://www.wordmadeflesh.org/) as the International Executive Director since 1996. He and Phileena reside in Omaha, Nebraska.
