Northwestern theatre student wins national award for scenic design

Set of Northwestern's theatre production Northwestern College senior Jack MacGregor, a theatre major from Denison, Iowa, received national recognition at the Region Five Kennedy Center College Theater Festival (KCACTF), which was held in Des Moines Jan. 16–21.

MacGregor won Region Five’s top scenic design award for his work on Northwestern’s production of “Silent Sky.” As a national winner, he earned an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where he will represent Region Five at the KCACTF National Festival in April. There, MacGregor’s scenic design will compete with that of seven other regional winners.

MacGregor also was given an Award of Commendation for his scenic and properties design for “One Snowy Night.” Other Northwestern students who won Awards of Commendation included the following:

  • Madison DenHerder, a senior theatre major from Hollandale, Minnesota, for achievement in costume design for “Silent Sky”;
  • Melissa Thompson, sophomore computer science major from Cavour, South Dakota, for achievement in sound design for “One Snowy Night”;
  • Chloe Tschetter, a 2023 graduate from Edgerton, Minnesota, for achievement in costume design for “Harvey”; and
  • Sierra Tumbleson, a 2023 graduate from Trimont, Minnesota, for achievement in sound design for “Harvey.”

Four other students, faculty and staff were commended for their work on Northwestern’s fall production of “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical”:

  • Chau Le, Northwestern’s administrative web programmer, for achievement in projection design;
  • Ethan Koerner, instructor in theatre, for achievement in scenic and properties design;
  • Kaylee Bandstra, a senior public relations major from Leighton, Iowa, for achievement in dramaturgy; and
  • Amber Huizenga, costume studio supervisor, for achievement in costume design.

The KCACTF Region Five Festival is an annual event that includes undergraduate and graduate students from six Midwestern states.
