Student-authored play on stage at Northwestern

“Julianne and Kristofferson Get Back Together,” a play by Northwestern College junior Alexander Lowry, has been selected by playwright Colette Mazunik for performance during the college’s 24th annual World Premiere Festival, which showcases student-authored scripts.

The full-length play will be performed in the England Theatre April 26 at 7 p.m. and April 27 at 2 and 7 p.m. The show is free; seating is first-come, first-served.

Junior Lucas Sander is directing the romantic comedy, which is set at a small college in Pennsylvania, Lowry’s home state. It follows the passionate, angsty young love of Julianne and Kristofferson and the ways in which their on-again, off-again relationship affects their art and circle of theatre friends.

Lowry wrote the play under the mentorship of theatre professor and playwright Jeff Barker. In choosing Lowry’s play for production, Mazunik compared it to Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” and said, “I couldn’t stop smiling at Lowry’s utterly loveable characters. They are smart and engaging, and were I still in college (and were this not fiction), I would have the biggest crush on Kristofferson—and maybe his friend Forrester as well.”

Mazunik graduated from Northwestern in 2000 and earned her M.F.A. in playwriting at the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University in New York City. She has written numerous plays, including “Match,” which was a 2018 Official Selection for the Manhattan Film Festival.
