NWC students to study abroad this summer

Northwestern College students will head to the Middle East and Eastern Europe this summer as part of two study abroad programs offered by the college’s global education office.

Theatre professor Jeff Barker will lead a trip to Israel and Palestine, where students will learn about that region’s culture through dramas found in the Old Testament. They’ll stay in homes, convents and youth hostels while exploring Israel’s language, land and theatre—both ancient and modern. Excursions will include Habima National Theatre in Tel Aviv, Mount Carmel, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

A study abroad trip to the Czech Republic will enable students to compare and contrast that nation’s sports, fitness and leisure pursuits with those of the United States. Students will interact with Czech college students while staying at two universities. They’ll also tour a Czech Olympic training center, visit a famous mineral water spa town, and explore castles and villages. Dr. Paul Bartlett, professor of kinesiology, and Carrie Krohn, assistant track and cross country coach, will lead the program.

Both courses are worth four credits and fulfill Northwestern’s general education cross-cultural studies requirement.
