Theatre professor honored by alma mater

Dr. Robert Hubbard, a professor of theatre and speech at Northwestern College, was inducted into the Minot State University (MSU) Academic Hall of Fame during a reception on Oct. 17.

Hubbard, who earned a bachelor’s degree in communication arts and English from Minot State in 1991, was also recognized during a performance of “The Miss Firecracker Contest,” presented by MSU’s theatre department, following the reception.

Hall of Fame inductees are selected by the MSU faculty senate based on faculty and community nominations of alumni who have achieved outstanding career success.

A veteran solo performer, Hubbard has performed his original solo shows at conferences, festivals, high schools, churches and community centers across the country, including Baltimore, Kansas City, Minneapolis and New York City. He received a fellowship to participate in the O’Neill Critics Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in 2005. He has directed numerous shows, including “The Seagull,” “Othello,” “The Odyssey,” an award-winning production of “The Comedy of Errors,” and an original stage adaptation of Larry Woiwode’s novel, “Beyond the Bedroom Wall.”

Northwestern College’s theatre department will present Hubbard’s adaptation of Graham Green’s novel, “The Power and the Glory,” in November.

Hubbard is also involved with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival as a workshop leader, producer and coordinator of the Region Five National Critics Institute Committee.

In addition to his work at the university level, Hubbard and his wife, April, associate professor of theatre at Northwestern, have also served as drama instructors at the International Music Camp every summer since 2007. They have mentored hundreds of school-age children interested in theatre arts.

A member of Northwestern’s faculty since 2001, Hubbard earned master’s and doctoral degrees in theatre from Bowling Green State University.
