NWC presents American Indian stories

“Trickster Tales,” a new play of American Indian stories by Kelley Zinge, will be presented by Northwestern College theatre Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 4 p.m., during the college’s Raider Days homecoming celebration. The family-friendly production will be presented in the Allen Theatre.

The cast is also presenting “Trickster Tales” to schoolchildren every Tuesday and Thursday from Oct. 4 to Nov. 15.

Northwestern theatre professor Dr. Robert Hubbard is directing a cast of 10 actors who will play multiple roles, including animals who often are tricksters in Native American lore: the coyote, fox, otter, rabbit, raccoon, raven and spider.

“The stories have a parable quality,” says Hubbard. “Audience members learn what not to do as they watch—and laugh at—what the trickster does.” In addition, some of the stories have a connection to the Sioux tribe. “It’s an opportunity to experience the wisdom of a culture that preceded ours,” he adds.

Tickets for “Trickster Tales” are $7 for adults and $4 for students. (The Raider Days matinee on Oct. 6 is free for alumni and parents of current students; tell the box office if you fit one of those categories when you call to reserve tickets.) The DeWitt Theatre box office opens Sept. 24 for Theatre Patrons; it is open Sept. 25 through Oct. 6 for the general public.
