Theatre department earns awards in regional competition

The cast of Asian Folk Tales as well as three Northwestern College theatre students and a staff member received a total of seven Certificates of Merit for their acting, design and dramaturgy efforts at the Region Five Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), held at Iowa State University in Ames Jan. 16–22.

Aleah Stenberg, a senior from Big Lake, Minn., received three certificates, one each for costume design and dramaturgy for Picasso at the Lapin Agile, performed last April, and one for dramaturgy for The Seagull, on stage in November.

Cast members for this fall’s children’s theatre production, Asian Folk Tales, received recognition for their ensemble acting, and junior Andrew Stam, Oskaloosa, took home a certificate for his design of the show’s program.

Senior Dan Laird, Orange City, received a Certificate of Merit for his properties design and construction of the set for last February’s musical, Into the Woods. The show’s costumes were also recognized; they were designed by Sarah Kuiken, Northwestern’s former costume shop manager.

Fourteen Northwestern College theatre students attended the 43rd annual festival. One student, Greta Hays, who received an acting nomination for Into the Woods, was unable to attend because she is interning in arts management at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., working on the national KCACTF event.
