Northwestern Symphonic Band presents concert centered on love of Christ

The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will present a concert titled “… with Love” on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Christ Chapel and is free and open to the public.

The Symphonic Band’s program is inspired by the words of Ephesians 3—“… that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge”—and presents music that draws to mind Christ’s love for us.

“Fanfare and Allegro,” a wind band standard by American composer Clifton Williams, will open the concert with a strong declaration from the trumpet and percussion sections, followed by a dark woodwind theme and a gradual increase in rhythmic complexity. “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” an Irish hymn arranged by Dan Forrest and transcribed by Jess Langton Turner, will provide space for tender reflection and is based on the words in Psalm 23.

Other program highlights include Scott McAllister’s “Love Songs,” a three-movement piece that focuses on the three loves: agape, philia and eros; Rossano Galante’s “Resplendent Glory,” signifying the beauty of God’s love for us; the lighthearted and playful melodies of Percy Grainger’s “Children’s March”; and “Omens of Love,” an upbeat tune with glittering brass by Japanese composer Hirotaka Izumi.
