Northwestern music department presents band and choral concerts in November
Thursday, October 21, 2021
The Northwestern College Symphonic Band will present a celebration-themed concert on Friday, Nov. 5, and the Heritage Singers and Jazz Band will perform Friday, Nov. 12. Both events will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel and are free and open to the public.
The Symphonic Band concert will highlight the anniversaries of several noteworthy compositions, including American bandmaster Karl L. King’s “The New Corn Palace March”—a centennial work that was performed at the grand opening of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Senior music education major Michael Hornback will be a featured soloist on alto saxophone and will conduct his peers in Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “English Folk Song Suite.” A piece from the film adaptation of “Fiddler on the Roof” will close the program in recognition of the film’s 50th anniversary.
In addition to lively Jazz Band repertoire, the Nov. 12 concert will feature the Heritage Singers in a program of emotive choral works. “Liebeslieder Waltzer (Love Song Waltzes)” by Johannes Brahms is scored for piano four hands and will be accompanied by Dr. Juyeon Kang and Janelle Phinney. “Dulaman” will welcome student fiddler Jamie Stoscher and alto Naomi Lief to the stage, and a King’s Singers arrangement of “Don’t Worry About Me” will bring the concert to a sentimental finish.
