Northwestern College to host joint vocal recital

Northwestern College students Rianna De Winkle and Brandon Lenderink will present a joint recital on Sunday, April 22, at 3 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

De Winkle’s performance will include several pieces by Samuel Barber, a 20th century composer. She will sing Barber’s “The Daisies,” “The Crucifixion” and “Secrets of the Old,” along with 18th century classical pieces “Cujus Animam” by Giovanni Pergolesi and “Oh Had I Jubal’s Lyre” by Handel. De Winkle will also perform “Sull’ aria” by Mozart as a duet with fellow soprano Megan Rustad and Frank Loesser’s “Adelaide’s Lament” from “Guys and Dolls.”

Lenderink’s repertoire will include both classical and contemporary pieces. “Revenge, Timotheus cries” by Handel, “Deh vieni alla finestra” by Mozart and “An die Musik” by Franz Schubert will be performed solo. Lenderink will also sing three duets: “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” by Cole Porter with fellow musician Jack Bonnecroy, and “The Point of No Return” and “All I Ask of You,” both by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with De Winkle. Lenderink will be accompanied by two surprise guest kazooists as he sings “Open Sesame Seeds” by P.D.Q. Bach.

Piano accompaniment for solos presented by both De Winkle and Lenderink will be provided by Pam De Haan, saxophone instructor at Northwestern.

De Winkle, from Ripon, Calif., is a junior vocal performance major who receives coaching under voice instructor Emily Lodine. A 2009 graduate of Ripon Christian High School, De Winkle is currently in her junior year at Northwestern and is the recipient of a vocal scholarship. She is a member of the A cappella Choir and Heritage Singers.

The daughter of Elroy and Connie De Winkle is considering enrollment in grad school to become either a college professor or to pursue a career in vocal performance.

Lenderink, from Sheldon, Iowa, is a fifth-year senior at Northwestern, majoring in music education with a K-12 endorsement. He is a member and student conductor of Northwestern’s A cappella Choir and a member of the Heritage Singers. Lenderink also sings on the Tuesday chapel worship team and is the musical director of the Gospel Choir.

A 2007 graduate of Sheldon High School, the son of Brian and Dyan Lenderink will begin student teaching this fall and hopes to secure a teaching position after graduation. Lenderink plans to attend graduate school in a few years to study choral conducting.
