NWC grad participates in summer research

Emma Wynja, a 2015 Northwestern College graduate who majored in biology health professions and chemistry, is spending the summer as part of a research team at Sanford Research in Sioux Falls.

Wynja is working in the lab of Dr. Paola Vermeer in an ongoing project exploring the characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The researchers are seeking to identify new targets for therapeutic intervention of these head and neck cancers.

The daughter of Carl and Lori Wynja, Sioux Falls, will be enrolled in the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine in the fall. She was selected as the 2015 recipient of the prestigious South Dakota State Medical Association Foundation Freshman Scholarship. Wynja received Northwestern’s Outstanding Graduating Senior Awards in biology and chemistry and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
