Students present at research conference

Seventeen Northwestern College students gave presentations at the Siouxland Social Science Research Conference, hosted by Briar Cliff University, Sioux City, Iowa, on April 7. They were among several student presenters from area private liberal arts colleges.

Chelsey Bohr, a senior psychology major from Royal, Iowa, presented “Personality, Goal Orientation, Age and Gender as Predictors of Critical Thinking and Epistemological Beliefs.”

Bohr also collaborated in a presentation on “Willpower, Persistence and the Discrepancy Between What One Values and How One Behaves.” Other collaborators were Taylor Culver, a Sioux City sophomore majoring in psychology; Dani Maurer, a freshman psychology and religion major from Sioux City; Kirsten McConnel, a junior psychology and Spanish major from Sioux Center; Megan Ott, a sophomore psychology major from Clear Lake, Iowa; Chantalle Reno, a junior from Bismarck, N.D., majoring in psychology and Spanish; Beverly Rubel, a sophomore psychology major from Palatine, Ill.; and Elizabeth Thompson, a junior psychology major from Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Senior psychology major Hollyann Elton, Cedar Rapids, spoke on “Narcissism, Perfectionism and Self-Worth: Predictors of Eating Disorders in Men and Women.”

Elton also collaborated in a presentation on “The Effects of Priming Volunteer Motives.” Other collaborators were Kelli Brands, a junior psychology major from Sioux Falls; Aly Cooper, a junior psychology major from Carroll, Iowa; Carrie Jones, a junior from Windom, Minn., majoring in psychology; Emily Hegstad, a junior social work major from Sanborn, Iowa; and Sadie Mennen, a junior psychology and sociology major from Parkersburg, Iowa.

Brittany Laackmann gave a presentation on “The Effects of Parent-Child Relationships on Sexual Activity and Behavior.” She is an Orange City senior majoring in psychology.

Heather McCollam spoke on “An Acceptance of Sexual Coercion: Gender, Age, Sensation Seeking and Narcissism.” She is a senior psychology major from Cherokee, Iowa.

Brandon Ogren, a junior psychology major from Cherokee, Iowa, presented “The Effect of Self-Esteem and Religiosity on Altruism.”
