Tim Lowly to speak in chapel

Tim Lowly, a Chicago-based artist and professor who has been exhibiting his works in Te Paske Gallery since Oct. 20, will speak in Northwestern College’s chapel service on Friday, Nov. 18, at 10:05 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

Lowly’s address will focus on vocation and how it relates to his art and to students in general. His interpretation of vocation has come through raising his daughter, Temma, and dealing with her disability. She is the focus of much of his artwork.

“Raising Temma has caused me to rethink the meaning of vocation,” says Lowly. “It’s not only about what I’m good at, it’s about who I’m placed in relationship with.”

A collection of Lowly’s portraits featuring Temma, “Without Moving, Tondos,” is on exhibit at Te Paske Gallery until Nov. 17. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m.

Lowly’s work has been shown nationally and internationally in more than 50 one-person and 100 group exhibitions, including at galleries in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lowly earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Calvin College. Since 1995 he has served as gallery director, assistant professor and artist-in-residence at North Park University in Chicago.
