Exhibit features work by Chicago artist

Tim Lowly’s daughter, Temma, takes center stage in his artwork.

“Temma is profoundly other,” he writes. “The brain damage she experienced shortly after birth has rendered her as one for whom the concepts ‘development’ and ‘ability’ have little relevance.”

Lowly’s art seeks meaning within a life shared with Temma, her mother and the others who care for her. His portraits of his daughter—done in acrylic and ink—take the form of tondos, or circular paintings, each one meter in diameter.

“Without Moving, Tondos,” an exhibit of Lowly’s artwork, will be on display in the Te Paske Gallery of Northwestern College Oct. 20 through Nov. 17. A public reception with the Chicago-based artist is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m.

Lowly is a graduate of Calvin College, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Since 1995 he has served as gallery director, assistant professor and artist-in-residence at North Park University in Chicago. His work has been shown nationally and internationally in more than 50 one-person and 100 group exhibitions, including at galleries in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Te Paske Gallery is located in the Thea G. Korver Visual Arts Center, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
