With degrees in both psychology and nursing, Professor Wede is a champion of holistic care, encouraging her students to attend to the overall well-being of their patients and themselves.
Holistic healer
Through getting to know her students, Professor Wede models Northwestern’s focus on holistic caregiving in nursing. She teaches students to go beyond treating someone’s physical ailments to considering other things going on their lives socially, emotionally and spiritually that can affect their health and well-being.
Standing out with students
One of Professor Wede’s favorite Bible verses is 1 Corinthians 12:4: “There are different kinds of gifts, but they were given by the same Spirit.” With this verse she reminds her students that they are created differently on purpose so that they can collaborate toward a goal—and it’s OK to stand out in different ways.
Focused affirmer
Professor Wede recognizes that nursing students can sometimes see their grades as the only way to measure their worth. Because of that, she is intentional about letting her students know she sees them for who they are—not the grades they receive.
Fond of diamonds
As a newlywed, Wede and her husband, Brian, took a road trip to six major league baseball games. She still enjoys watching baseball, including the Raiders, for whom Brian serves as head coach. In her spare time she likes to go for walks, read and bake (cinnamon rolls and pies are her standouts).
