Northwestern to commemorate Justice Week

Area residents are invited to several events that will take place on Northwestern College’s campus during Justice Week, Jan. 16–21.

Dr. Michael Andres, a Northwestern religion professor, and Rahn Franklin, the college’s director of multicultural student development, will speak on “Calm and Chaotic Waters” during a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day chapel service at 10:05 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, in Christ Chapel.

Dr. David Montague, executive director of the Memphis Teacher Residency, will speak in chapel at 11:05 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17. He will also talk about “Urban Education as a Civil Rights Movement” Tuesday night at 7 in the Vogel Community Room of the DeWitt Learning Commons.

Montague’s program seeks to combat the problem of educational inequality that often exists along economic and racial lines by preparing effective teachers in a Christian context. Residents earn a master’s degree in urban education while teaching in a mentor’s classroom for a year and then commit to teaching in Memphis’ high-needs schools three additional years.

NWC alumni Felipe and Janelle Silva will speak on Jan. 18 as part of Justice Week.Northwestern College alumni Felipe and Janelle Silva will present “A Story About Innovative Christian Community” on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 10:05 a.m. in the Vogel Community Room. The Silvas have been serving with New Horizons Foundation in the impoverished Jiu Valley of Romania since 2013. Their focus is helping youth develop trust, courage, discipline, confidence and persistence through rock-climbing experiences at Fara Limite Sala de Catarare (No Limit Climbing Gym).

Felipe Silva has been named the 2017 Young Alumni Award recipient by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities and will be honored at the association’s presidents’ conference in Washington, D.C., Jan. 25–27. The public is invited to an open-house reception for the Silvas on Monday, Jan. 16, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Fireside Room of the Ramaker Center.

The Rev. Dr. Jin Kim, founding pastor of Church of All Nations in Columbia Heights, Minn., will speak in chapel on Friday, Jan. 20, at 10:05 a.m. A Doctor of Ministry degree graduate from Columbia Theological Seminary, he speaks widely on topics such as justice and ecumenical unity and serves as an adjunct professor for the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.
