Northwestern College to host Raider Days

Northwestern College will celebrate Raider Days, the college’s annual homecoming and family weekend, Oct. 24–25 with traditions such as the Red Raider Road Race and Morning on the Green carnival as well as football and soccer games.

The Raider Days weekend also includes a campus concert by Christian musical artists Tenth Avenue North and Phil Wickham on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at nwciowa.edu/concert-tickets.

During Raider Days, seven classes (2014, 2009, 2004, 1994, 1989, 1984 and 1974) will celebrate reunions at a Saturday tailgate picnic on campus, and members of the 50-year reunion class of 1964 are invited to lunch at The Nederlander’s Grill in Orange City.

A theatre alumni reunion is also part of Raider Days 2014. The schedule for the weekend includes events at the Old Factory coffeehouse Friday night, following the children’s theatre show Saturday afternoon, and at the home of professors Karen and Jeff Barker Saturday night.

The majority of Raider Days events are on Saturday, Oct. 25, starting with the 21st annual Red Raider Road Race at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $20; cost is $25 the day of the race. Visit nwciowa.edu/raider-road-race for registration details.

From 9:30 to noon, enjoy Morning on the Green in the center of campus. The carnival will include games and prizes; proceeds support student clubs and organizations. At 10 a.m., alumni are invited to enjoy coffee with emeriti faculty and staff in the newly renovated Ramaker Center.

At 10 a.m. alumni soccer players will be taking the field for matches against the current teams. An Athletic Recognition Luncheon at 11 a.m. in the Vermeer South Dining Room will celebrate 2014 Hall of Fame inductees Sara Friedrichsen ’02 (basketball and softball), Laura Jacobson ’08 (track and cross country), and Curt Schilling ’08 (basketball); Barnabas awardees Kara Christoffer DeGroot ’01 (basketball) and Lisa Muilenburg Vos ’07 (softball); and coaches of the year Doug De Zeeuw ’92 (cross country, MOC-FV High School), Craig Douma ’94 (men’s basketball, Central College), Aaron Johnson ’00 (boys’ basketball, West Lyon High School), and Tim Van Regenmorter ’98 (football, Sioux Center High School).

A tailgate picnic lunch will be served on the campus green from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6 to 10; children five and under eat free. The Raider football team will kick off against Dordt at 1:30 p.m. on Korver Field.

A family-friendly drama, “Tales of the Kingdom,” takes the DeWitt Theatre stage at 4 p.m. Tickets are free for alumni and parents and can be reserved at nwciowa.edu/tickets starting Oct. 13. Day-of-show tickets will also be available at the door. After the play, theatre alumni are invited to a reception in the lobby that will include an appearance by 88 Improv.

The Raider soccer teams take the field against Hastings at 4 p.m. (men) and 6:15 (women).

At 6 p.m. the Distinguished Alumni Dinner will honor the professional, humanitarian and Northwestern service achievements of David Vellinga ’72 of Des Moines; Henrietta Van Maanen ’55, Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Dr. Mark Muilenburg ’84, Orange City. Reservations are required: 712-707-7127.

The Northwestern College music department will present a free concert at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel, followed by a reception for the parents of students involved in music at Northwestern.
